The international fair of contemporary art of Madrid celebrated his 39º edition from 26 February to 1 March in IFEMA Madrid counting with 209 art galleries from 30 different countries.
This selection of national and international galleries was curated in different sections:
- Dialogues, leaded by Agustín Pérez-Rubio and Lucia Sanromán
- Opening, leaded by Tiago de Abreu Pinto and Övül ö. Durmusoglu
- It’s Just a Matter of Time leaded by Alejandro Cesarco, Mason Leaver-Yap and Manuel Segade.
ARCO is one of the main contemporary art fairs in the international circuit and this year registered the attendance of 93,000 people, lower number than in previous editions, it is believed that due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, gallery owners talk about a great commercial success and celebrate that sales have gone well, with a positive balance that shows the dynamism and quality of the invited gallerists and collectors, with a great complicity between them.
Maribel López was making her debut for the first year as director of ARCO and highlighted the increase of women artists in this last edition.
With no guest country in 2020, there was a section at ARCO dedicated to the work of Cuban American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres, with 13 galleries participating.
In short, it has been a different edition to previous ones, more mature and less political, but still celebrating, supporting and recognizing artistic creation.
